Sono EV Background

At first, it looks like Sono is just another EV startup, which was very common a couple of years ago. But when you start exploring their portfolio, you'll see that Sono is much more than just another small EV company. With their unique idea, advanced technology, and influence on other parts of the transportation industry, Sono's first car might fail to sell in sufficient numbers, but their other ventures will change automotive history. We at Voldt always love to support such ambitious and adventurous companies with our quality products and charging cable solutions.

Sono EV Model

The first and only Sono EV model is called Sion and has been in development since 2016. After a few production delays and financing difficulties, Sion finally saw the light of day in 2024, but its current status is unknown. Despite the significant interest and innovative approach, this German company is considering discontinuing Sion and concentrating on other ventures, developing EV solutions for other companies, and licensing already patented technology.

Sono EV Technology

What sets Sono apart from other EV companies is their idea that electric vehicles should have help from solar panels and try to harvest as much energy as possible from the environment. That is why the Sono Sion has lightweight and patented construction, including solar panels on the hood and roof and on the sides of the vehicle. Of course, solar power is not sufficient to power the car by itself, but Sono's engineers claim that it can provide up to 5000 kilometres of driving per year and help prolong the Sion range. Sion's powertrain consists of a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a front-mounted electric motor, and solar panels. The system for charging the battery from solar panels while the vehicle is on the move is patented by Sono.

However, despite the genius idea and real-life advantages of such an engineering concept, Sono had difficulties selling it on the Sion electric vehicle. Fortunately, this technology found widespread use for buses, commercial vehicles, refrigerator trucks, recreational vehicles, and so on. We at Voldt have designed our charging cables for reliable performance with Sono EV technology, regardless of the application.
