At first, it looks like Sono is just another EV startup, which was very common a couple of years ago. Sono EV Model

The first and only Sono EV model is called Sion and has been in development since 2016. After a few production delays and financing difficulties, Sion finally saw the light of day in 2024, but its current status is unknown. Despite the significant interest and innovative approach, this German company is considering discontinuing Sion and concentrating on other ventures, developing EV solutions for other companies, and licensing already patented technology.

That is why the Sono Sion has lightweight and patented construction, including solar panels on the hood and roof and on the sides of the vehicle. Sion's powertrain consists of a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a front-mounted electric motor, and solar panels. The system for charging the battery from solar panels while the vehicle is on the move is patented by Sono. 

However, despite the genius idea and real-life advantages of such an engineering concept, Sono had difficulties selling it on the Sion electric vehicle. Fortunately, this technology found widespread use for buses, commercial vehicles, refrigerator trucks, recreational vehicles, and so on.
