The BMW i5 is the fully electric version of the G60 5 Series, available in three variants: the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 (250 kW), the all-wheel-drive xDrive40 (290 kW), and the M60 xDrive (442 kW, 820 Nm with boost). All three come as a saloon and as a Touring estate, sharing an 81.2 kWh usable battery and a Type 2 / CCS charging port on the right rear flank. The eDrive40 and xDrive40 have a standard 11 kW three-phase onboard charger, with a 22 kW three-phase unit available as an option; the M60 comes with the 22 kW charger as standard. DC rapid charging runs at up to 205 kW across all variants, covering 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. WLTP saloon range in current production reaches up to 391 miles for the eDrive40, up to 363 miles for the xDrive40, and up to 321 miles for the M60. Touring figures sit slightly below those of the corresponding saloon. From March 2025 production, SiC inverter upgrades improved the eDrive40 and xDrive40 by up to 30 miles; pre-update cars of those variants reach up to 362 and 334 miles respectively. The M60's range is unchanged across all production dates.

Which cable suits the BMW i5

Every i5 variant charges via a Type 2 connector, making a Voldt® Type 2 charging cable the correct choice for eDrive40, xDrive40, and M60 alike. In the UK, where most home wallboxes deliver single-phase power, the cable rating directly affects charge speed. A Voldt® 22 kW cable carries current at up to 32A, which on a single-phase connection translates to 7.4 kW: enough to replenish the full 81.2 kWh battery in roughly eleven hours. An 11 kW cable, rated at 16A, limits the same connection to 3.7 kW, stretching a full charge to the better part of a day. The 22 kW cable is the more practical choice for any i5 on a standard UK home supply. For M60 owners, the 22 kW cable is the natural match for the car's standard 22 kW onboard charger, and for eDrive40 or xDrive40 owners who specified the optional 22 kW unit, the same cable also unlocks the full charge rate at three-phase public posts: around four hours from near-empty.

The right rear port position means reversing into a bay places the connector within easy reach of most charge post layouts. For a car the size of the i5, particularly the Touring, an eight-metre cable is the most practical default: long enough to reach comfortably whether the wallbox sits beside the driver's door or behind the car, and flexible enough for public posts set further back from the bay. A ten-metre cable removes any consideration of post placement entirely. Voldt® Type 2 cables are available in 6, 8, 10, and 15-metre lengths.

Portable chargers for every stop

A three-phase red commando socket (CEE) at a holiday rental, workshop, or rural property turns any overnight stop into a full charging opportunity. For eDrive40 and xDrive40 models with the standard 11 kW charger, the Voldt® 11 kW red CEE portable charger delivers the full 11 kW at 16A per phase, covering a complete charge from near-empty in approximately seven and a half hours. For the M60, or eDrive40 and xDrive40 models specified with the optional 22 kW charger, the Voldt® 22 kW red CEE portable charger delivers the full 22 kW at 32A per phase and brings that down to around four hours. Both chargers feature adjustable current settings, so you can match the output to whatever the local supply can handle.

At campsites, marinas, and touring parks with blue single-phase commando sockets, the Voldt® blue CEE portable charger charges at up to 3.7 kW. With the i5's 81.2 kWh battery, this rate suits longer stays where the car can charge steadily over a couple of days. Where only a standard three-pin socket is available, the Voldt® three-pin portable charger delivers up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what your household wiring can sustain. A built-in thermal sensor monitors the connection temperature throughout and adjusts the current automatically, so the charger manages itself on older circuits without manual intervention. With a battery of this capacity, the three-pin charger works well for topping up range during an extended stay at a property without a dedicated wallbox: a weekend visit to family, a few days at a holiday let, or supplementing your main charging routine while parked at a second home.
