BMW i4 charging cable

BMW i4 charging cable

11kW
The BMW i4 has a charging capacity of 11kW. So we recommend using a charging cable of atleast 11kW for optimal charging speeds.

22kW cable compatible
However, please be aware that a 22kW cable is perfectly capable of charging at 11kW. With a 22kW cable you'll have guaranteed optimal charging speeds in the event of a new car or a possible upgrade in charging capacity.

Collection: BMW i4 charging cable

The BMW i4 takes the 4 Series Gran Coupé silhouette and rebuilds it as a dedicated electric car: same low roofline, same rear-biased proportions, no combustion engine. Four variants share the CLAR platform, the same right-rear CCS charging port, and the same 11 kW three-phase onboard AC charger with no higher option available. The eDrive35 is the entry point: a 70.2 kWh battery (66.0 kWh usable), a single rear motor producing 210 kW, and DC fast charging up to 180 kW. The eDrive40 steps up to 83.9 kWh (81.3 kWh usable), 250 kW from its single rear motor, and DC charging up to 205 kW. The xDrive40 shares the eDrive40's 81.3 kWh usable battery but adds a front motor for all-wheel drive, raising combined output to 295 kW. At the top sits the M50 with dual motors, 400 kW combined, and a 0–100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds. The M50 was replaced by the M60 for the 2026 model year, and production of all i4 variants is expected to wind down in late 2026 as the Neue Klasse i3 takes over. On the 11 kW charger, a full charge from near-empty takes approximately seven hours for the eDrive35 and approximately eight hours for the eDrive40, xDrive40, and M50. DC rapid charging covers 10–80 % in around 30 minutes across the range.

The right cable across the i4 range

Most UK homes charge on single-phase power. On a 32A single-phase wallbox, the most common domestic setup for EV owners, every i4 variant draws 7.4 kW. A Voldt® Type 2 22 kW charging cable is rated at 32A per phase and delivers the full 7.4 kW on a single-phase 32A circuit. An 11 kW cable, rated at only 16A per phase, would cap your single-phase charging speed at 3.7 kW: half the rate, purely because of the cable specification. On a 16A wallbox both cables deliver 3.7 kW equally, but the 22 kW cable keeps you ready for a wallbox upgrade, a public 32A post, or a future vehicle with a higher-capacity charger. Since the i4 does not offer an optional 22 kW onboard charger, the cable you buy today will very likely outlast the car, making future-proofing a sound investment regardless of which variant you drive.

The right-rear port is consistent across all i4 variants, so reversing into a bay brings the connector closest to the charge point every time. A 6-metre cable covers most home setups where the wallbox sits near the parking space. An 8-metre cable is the most practical all-round length for any i4, handling both home and the majority of public situations without repositioning the car. A 10-metre cable gives useful extra reach at posts set further from the bay or where the port side faces away from the pillar. A 15-metre cable suits long driveways, hotel car parks, and any layout where the geometry works against you.

Charging between destinations

A Voldt® portable charger with a red three-phase CEE plug (up to 11 kW) matches the onboard charger fitted to every i4 and delivers the full 11 kW from a 16A three-phase supply. At that rate, the eDrive35's 66.0 kWh battery charges from near-empty in approximately seven hours, while the 81.3 kWh battery in the eDrive40, xDrive40, and M50 takes approximately eight hours. Three-phase CEE sockets are uncommon in UK homes but can be found at workshops, farms, and some commercial premises. The Voldt® blue CEE portable charger draws up to 3.7 kW from a single-phase 16A CEE socket, the type found at campsites and marinas across Europe. For the eDrive35 this adds useful range over a day's stay, and for the larger-battery variants it works well for topping up over a longer stop.

The Voldt® three-pin portable charger plugs into any standard UK household socket and delivers up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what your wiring can sustain. The eDrive35's smaller battery is the most responsive to this pace: an overnight stop adds a meaningful share of range. For the eDrive40, xDrive40, and M50, the three-pin charger comes into its own at destinations where the car sits for an extended period, a weekend away, a longer work trip, or any stop where every kilowatt-hour counts. A built-in thermal sensor monitors the plug and socket temperature continuously and adjusts the charging current automatically if things begin to warm beyond safe limits.
