Tesla loses battery while preconditioning during charging
Tesla's preheating system is a highly appreciated feature by users, offering the ability to warm the vehicle's interior and batteries before setting off, ensuring comfort and convenience. However, this convenience can have some implications for charging, impacting overall efficiency. Preheating shouldn't be considered "free". Its primary purpose is to provide a comfortable environment without using battery power during the journey, thus optimizing range. Warming the battery before setting off can help reach the optimal temperature for more efficient charging, reducing charging time and improving energy absorption capacity. However, this isn't entirely true. In fact, it could actually have the opposite effect. Despite the benefits, activating preheating while the vehicle is plugged into a charging station can pose some complications: When the preheating system is active during charging, part of the energy supplied by the grid is used to heat the battery and interior, reducing the amount of energy available for charging itself. This can lead to slightly longer charging times than charging without active preheating. Batteries function best at optimal temperatures. While preheating may seem like an advantage, in some cases it can interfere with optimal thermal management strategies, impacting the overall efficiency of the charging process. If preheating is active during charging, valuable energy is dedicated to heating, reducing the amount of energy the charging station can deliver to the battery and potentially increasing charging times and also reducing battery efficiency. For these reasons, it is best to activate preheating when the vehicle is still powered by the grid, but not during charging. This way, the energy is used for heating without impacting charging efficiency. Tesla allows you to schedule preheating to activate automatically before departure, without interfering with charging sessions. For Tesla users, understanding these dynamics means optimizing the driving experience, combining comfort and convenience with energy efficiency.
