Collection: Type 2 charging cable

Type 2 charging cable for everyday and professional use

A type 2 charging cable is the standard charging cable for electric vehicles in Europe. In this category you'll find Voldt®'s type 2 ev charging cable solutions, designed for reliable charging at public charge points and fixed wallboxes. These cables are suitable for home use, on the road and professional charging, with variants for different power ratings, phases and lengths.

Voldt® develops and manufactures all charging cables in Europe. That means controlled material quality, fixed specifications and consistent performance, even with intensive use. Whether you're looking for a type 2 charging cable 5 metre, type 2 ev cable 7 metre, type 2 charger cable 10 metre or type 2 cable 15 metre, you always choose the same technical foundation: a durable cable, clear certification and a long lifespan without surprises.

What is a type 2 charging cable and when do you use it?

Many users wonder: what is a type 2 ev charging cable and when do you need one? An ev charging cable type 2 connects your electric car to a charge point or wallbox equipped with a type 2 connection. This has been the European standard for years and is used by virtually all modern electric cars and plug-in hybrids.

You use a type 2 to type 2 charging cable when you:

  • charge at a public charging station
  • have a fixed charge point or wallbox at home
  • want flexibility between different charging locations

At Voldt, there are variants for single-phase type 2 charging cable and three-phase type 2 ev charger cable, so you always connect to the charging capacity of both your installation and your car.

How does a type 2 charging cable work at a charge point?

When charging, you plug one end of the cable into the charge point and the other end into the car. The type 2 ev charging cable handles not only power transfer, but also communication between car and charge point. Only when both sides are correctly connected and recognised does the charging process start.

The cable determines:

  • how much current can be safely transferred
  • whether charging is single-phase or three-phase
  • whether maximum power is available

That's why it's important that a type 2 charging cable 16a or type 2 cable 32a matches both the charge point and the vehicle. An incorrectly chosen cable limits charging power or prevents charging completely.

The charging power in kiloWatts is determined by the current (Amperes) and the number of phases. For type 2 charging cables, you'll find 4 categories:

  • 3.7 kW = 16 Ampere in 1 phase
  • 7.4 kW = 32 Ampere in 1 phase
  • 11 kW = 16 Ampere in 3 phases
  • 22 kW = 32 Ampere in 3 phases

What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase charging?

The difference between a single-phase type 2 charging cable and a three-phase type 2 ev cable lies in how power is supplied.

With single-phase charging, one power phase is used. This is common with lighter connections and results in lower charging powers, often suitable for 7kW or 11kW depending on the car.

With three-phase charging, three power phases are used simultaneously. This allows considerably faster charging; where single-phase often stops at 7.4 kW, a three-phase connection often reaches 11 kW or even 22 kW. To utilise the maximum speed of 22 kW, a 32A type 2 ev charger cable is required, provided both the car and the charge point support this.

The charging cable itself doesn't automatically make the difference bigger, but must be suitable for the chosen charging type. That's why Voldt® always provides clear specifications per cable.

Type 1 or type 2 charging cable: how do you make the right choice?

A frequently asked question is: type 1 or type 2 charging cable? The answer depends on your car's connection. Older or imported models may still have a type 1 connection, whilst European models almost always use type 2.

The difference between type 1 and type 2 charging cable lies in:

  • the number of phases supported
  • the maximum charging capacity
  • compatibility with European charge points

In doubt? Always check your vehicle's connection before choosing a cable.

What is a Mennekes plug?

The term Mennekes type 2 charging cable is often used for a ev charging cables. Mennekes is the manufacturer that developed the type 2 plug design. In practice, type 2 plug and Mennekes plug mean the same thing.

When you search for a Mennekes type 2 charging cable, you're therefore looking for a cable with the European type 2 standard, suitable for virtually all public charge points in Europe.

Length, power and practical choices

Voldt® offers charging cables in various lengths, so you always find the right match for your situation. For fixed charge points close to the car, a 5 or 7 metre cable suffices. Need to bridge a greater distance? Then choose our 10 or 15 metre variants, which charge with the same high-quality safety and reliability.

If you're looking for solutions for specific situations, you may also come across questions such as extending a type 2 charging cable or connecting an ev charging cable type 2 to 3 pin socket.

Important to know: our charging cables are designed for direct connection to charge points and wallboxes. Extending or combining with household sockets is not technically and safety-wise equivalent to a full charging solution.

Why choose Voldt® Type 2 charging cables?

All Voldt® charging cables are:

  • designed and manufactured in Europe
  • CE, UKCA and TÜV certified
  • suitable for intensive daily use
  • clearly specified, without hidden limitations

Whether you choose a 16a type 2 charging cable, 32a type 2 ev cable, 22kW type 2 charger cable or a specific length, you know exactly what you're getting.
