The e-tron Sportback was produced from 2020 to 2022, when the nameplate was replaced by the Q8 e-tron Sportback. It shares the platform and powertrain options of the original e-tron SUV, with a sloping fastback roofline that improves aerodynamics and adds around ten to fifteen miles of WLTP range over the equivalent SUV variant. Two powertrain options were available throughout the run. The e-tron Sportback 50 quattro uses a 71 kWh gross battery with 64.7 kWh usable, twin motors producing 230 kW (313 PS) and 540 Nm through quattro all-wheel drive, with 0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and a WLTP range of approximately 322 km (200 miles). DC rapid charging peaks at 120 kW. The e-tron Sportback 55 quattro uses the larger 95 kWh gross battery, with 83.6 kWh usable on earlier cars and 86.5 kWh on later examples following a battery management update. Output is 300 kW (408 PS) and 664 Nm, with 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and WLTP range of up to 410 km (255 miles). DC rapid charging peaks at 150 kW, with a 10–80% charge in approximately 30 minutes. Both variants are full BEVs with no combustion backup. Like the e-tron SUV and e-tron S, the Sportback carries charging ports on both front flanks. The left front inlet combines CCS2 DC and AC Type 2, handling both rapid DC charging and standard AC. The right front inlet is AC-only Type 2, providing a second AC point for situations where the passenger-side port is closer to a charge post. In right-hand-drive UK configuration, the combined CCS port sits on the nearside, aligning naturally with pavement-side charge posts in forward-entry parallel bays.

AC charging and wallbox times

The onboard AC charger is 11 kW three-phase as standard on both Sportback variants, with a 22 kW upgrade available as a factory option. At 11 kW from a compatible wallbox, the 64.7 kWh battery in the Sportback 50 takes approximately six and a half hours from near-empty. The 86.5 kWh battery in the Sportback 55 takes around eight and a half to nine hours at the same rate, fitting within a standard overnight charge. With the optional 22 kW charger and a three-phase 32A supply, those times drop to approximately three hours on the 64.7 kWh battery and four and a quarter hours on the 86.5 kWh.

Choosing the right cable

Both Type 2 inlets accept a Voldt® Type 2 charging cable for all AC charging across both Sportback variants. The standard onboard charger is 11 kW three-phase, and an 11 kW Voldt® cable is the correct match for cars without the optional 22 kW charger. A 7.4 kW cable limits the charge rate below the onboard charger ceiling, adding around three to four hours to a full session on the larger battery. For cars specified with the optional 22 kW charger, a 22 kW Voldt® cable completes the setup, provided the wallbox also delivers 22 kW three-phase.

The left-side combined CCS2/Type 2 port aligns naturally with forward-entry parallel bays in UK layouts, where the nearside port faces the pavement-side charge post directly. The right-side AC-only port is highly practical for reverse-entry driveways and dedicated multi-vehicle home setups. A 6-metre cable covers most home driveways and purpose-built bays without difficulty. An 8-metre cable adds reach for posts set further back in a bay or for wider spaces where approach angle increases the effective distance between the port and the post.

Portable charging for the e-tron Sportback

The Voldt® portable CEE charging cable gives access to industrial sockets at workshops and some commercial marinas. On a 32A three-phase CEE socket (22 kW), output is capped at 11 kW by the standard onboard charger, matching the wallbox times above. Cars with the optional 22 kW charger will use the full socket output. On a 16A three-phase CEE socket (11 kW), charge times are identical to a home wallbox: around six and a half hours for the Sportback 50 and eight and a half to nine hours for the Sportback 55.

Red three-phase CEE sockets are found at industrial sites, workshops, and some commercial marinas. Standard European campsite hookup points use blue single-phase 16A CEE sockets, which cap output at 3.7 kW. At that rate, the 64.7 kWh battery takes around 17 hours for a full charge; the 86.5 kWh battery around 26 hours. A campsite blue socket is adequate for a partial top-up during a multi-night stay, but not a practical source for a full charge on a single overnight stop.
