The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ is a performance plug-in hybrid SUV available in two body styles: the straight-backed SUV and the fastback Coupé. Both share the same drivetrain, combining an AMG-tuned 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder producing 443 hp with a 134 hp electric motor integrated between the engine and the 9-speed automatic transmission. Combined system output is 536 hp and 750 Nm, delivered through AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. A 31.2 kWh lithium-ion battery (approximately 27 kWh usable) mounted above the rear axle delivers a WLTP electric range of 80–86 km (50–53 miles) for the SUV and 82–87 km (51–54 miles) for the Coupé, with 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. The GLE 53 Hybrid is equipped with an 11 kW three-phase onboard AC charger as standard, using a Type 2 inlet on the left rear flank. DC rapid charging at up to 60 kW via CCS2 is available as a paid option, enabling a 10–80% charge in around 20 minutes.

Charging from a wallbox

On a three-phase wallbox at the full 11 kW, the GLE 53 Hybrid charges from near-empty to full in approximately two hours 50 minutes. On a single-phase home wallbox with a correctly rated cable, the onboard charger draws 32A on one phase = 7.4 kW, completing a full charge in approximately four hours. A three-phase wallbox reaches the car's full 11 kW rate, but single-phase at 7.4 kW remains practical as an overnight option for most owners.

Which cable to use

An 11 kW Voldt® Type 2 cable is the correct match for the GLE 53 Hybrid at any three-phase wallbox or public AC post. On a single-phase home wallbox (7.4 kW), however, an 11 kW three-phase cable bottlenecks the session to 3.7 kW, as its conductors are rated at 16A per phase rather than the 32A a single-phase wallbox delivers on one line. At 3.7 kW, a full charge takes around eight hours instead of four. A 22 kW cable, with 32A-per-phase conductors, carries the full single-phase load and delivers 7.4 kW. For owners with a single-phase home installation, a 22 kW cable is the practical choice: it covers home charging at 7.4 kW, public three-phase posts at 11 kW, and future-proofs for any vehicle with 22 kW AC charging.

Getting the reach right

The charging port is on the left rear flank, so reversing to the wallbox suits most home setups. A 6-metre cable provides comfortable reach to the inlet without excess cable on the ground. An 8 or 10-metre cable suits garages or driveways where the car parks at a greater distance from the charge point. For workplace charging, car parks, or any location where the charger position varies, lengths from 10 m upward remove any concern about reach, and Voldt® supplies cables up to 40 metres for installations where a long run is genuinely needed.

Portable charging with a CEE charger

The Voldt® portable CEE charging cable gives the GLE 53 Hybrid flexible AC charging wherever a fixed wallbox is unavailable. On a 16A three-phase CEE socket (11 kW), a full charge takes approximately two hours 50 minutes. On a 32A three-phase CEE socket (22 kW available), the car's 11 kW ceiling applies and the result is the same. On a 16A single-phase CEE socket (3.7 kW), a full charge takes approximately eight hours, suited to an extended overnight stop.

Red three-phase CEE sockets are found at industrial sites, workshops, and some commercial marinas. Standard European campsite hookup points use blue single-phase 16A CEE sockets, which cap output at 3.7 kW and result in the eight-hour charge time noted above. For a 27 kWh battery, a campsite overnight stop covers the charge comfortably at that rate. On a standard domestic socket at 2.3 kW, a full charge takes around 13 hours: useful as an emergency top-up but not a practical regular charging method for a battery of this size.
