The Volkswagen e-Golf put a fully electric drivetrain into the seventh-generation Golf and changed very little else about it. Cars built from 2014 carry a 24.2 kWh battery, 20.5 kWh of it usable, with a 3.6 kW onboard charger that draws 16 A from a single phase. The 2017 update raised the battery to 35.8 kWh, 31.5 kWh usable, and brought a 7.2 kW onboard charger able to take either 32 A from one phase or 16 A from each of two. Both generations place the Type 2 inlet inside the CCS2 flap on the offside rear wing, in the spot the petrol Golf keeps its filler.

Home charging in Britain runs on a single phase, and a modern wall box is usually good for 32 A, or 7.4 kW. That current only reaches the car if the cable between them is built to carry it. Length deserves more thought on an e-Golf than on a car with a nose-mounted inlet. Everywhere else there is a domestic three-pin socket. The Voldt® three-pin portable charger adjusts from 8 A to 13 A, up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what your wiring or installation can sustain. Thirteen amps is the ceiling BS 1363 allows on a domestic plug rather than a limit of the charger, and a thermal sensor in the plug body monitors the temperature of the connection and trims the current automatically if it starts to climb. Twelve hours at the top of the range returns roughly 100 miles of driving, which refills the 24.2 kWh car outright and brings the 35.8 kWh car close to full. A charger held at 10 A returns about 84 miles across the same twelve hours, and being able to pick the setting is what makes an older garage circuit usable.
