11kW
The Volkswagen E-Golf has a charging capacity of 11kW. So we recommend using a charging cable of atleast 11kW for optimal charging speeds.

22kW cable compatible
However, please be aware that a 22kW cable is perfectly capable of charging at 11kW. With a 22kW cable you'll have guaranteed optimal charging speeds in the event of a new car or a possible upgrade in charging capacity.

Collection: Volkswagen E-Golf charging cable

The Volkswagen e-Golf is a fully electric version of the seventh-generation Golf, produced across two battery specifications. The original model (2014–2016, Mk7) used a 24.2 kWh battery with a NEDC range of around 130 km (83 miles), while the updated version (2017–2019, Mk7.5) introduced a larger 35.8 kWh battery, extending official range to around 300 km (186 miles) on the NEDC cycle. Both generations share the same 100 kW (136 hp) front motor, 290 Nm of torque, and a top speed of 150 km/h, with a 0–100 km/h time of 9.6 seconds. The e-Golf was discontinued in 2019 and replaced by the ID.3.

The combined CCS2 charging inlet is on the right rear flank of the vehicle, in the same position as the fuel filler flap on the petrol Golf. On the original Mk7 model, the standard onboard AC charger was rated at 3.6 kW; the 7.2 kW charger and DC fast charging capability were part of an optional package. From the Mk7.5 update, 7.2 kW AC became standard fitment, with DC fast charging at up to 40 kW continuing as an option, enabling a 10–80% charge in around 30 minutes.

Wallbox charging

On Mk7.5 cars with the standard 7.2 kW onboard charger, a full charge from empty takes approximately 5 hours 15 minutes at a wallbox. On original Mk7 models with the 3.6 kW charger, the same process takes around 7 hours for the 24.2 kWh battery. Mk7 cars fitted with the optional 7.2 kW charger match the Mk7.5 charge time. In daily use, most drivers top up from a partial state, so real-world sessions are considerably shorter across both generations.

Which cable to use

An 11 kW Voldt® Type 2 cable is the correct match for every e-Golf. It handles the 3.6 kW and 7.2 kW onboard chargers of all variants without restriction, and connects to every Type 2 wallbox and public AC charge point built to the IEC 62196-2 standard. A 22 kW cable is equally well suited to all e-Golf variants and provides forward compatibility for any future vehicle with a higher-rated onboard charger.

Getting the reach right

Voldt® Type 2 cables are available in lengths from 4 m up to 40 m. A 6 m cable suits most home wallbox installations, providing comfortable reach from a wall-mounted charger to the right rear inlet without excess cable on the ground. An 8 m or 10 m cable gives more flexibility for garages and driveways where the car cannot always be parked squarely in front of the charge point. For public charging stations and workplace bays where the charger position varies, lengths from 10 m upward remove any concern about reach, and Voldt® supplies cables up to 40 m for installations where a longer run is genuinely needed.

Portable charging with a CEE charger

The e-Golf's compact battery makes it one of the more practical candidates for portable CEE charging, with full charges achievable in reasonable timeframes even from smaller sockets. The Voldt® portable EV charger connects via the Type 2 portion of the CCS2 inlet and is available in models from 3.7 kW to 22 kW. The e-Golf's onboard charger is single-phase, so it draws from one phase only at any CEE socket. At a 32A three-phase CEE socket, the car draws up to its 7.2 kW ceiling on a single phase, giving a full charge in around 5 hours 15 minutes on the Mk7.5 35.8 kWh battery and around 3 hours 30 minutes on the Mk7 24.2 kWh battery. At a 16A three-phase or 16A single-phase CEE socket, the supply is limited to 3.7 kW per phase, giving a full charge in around 10 hours 30 minutes on the larger battery and around 7 hours on the smaller one. The 32A three-phase portable charger reaches the full 7.2 kW ceiling of Mk7.5 and optionally-equipped Mk7 cars, and covers any other vehicles in a mixed household or fleet at their respective charging ceilings.

Voldt® charging cables are CE, UKCA and TÜV certified and manufactured according to IATF 16949 automotive quality standards. Single-piece moulded connectors, no glue or screws. IP67-rated for operation between −30°C and +50°C. 100% copper conductors with silver-plated contacts. Tested beyond 10,000 connection cycles.
