The Volkswagen ID. Polo is the first fully electric Polo, built on the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive. Two batteries are offered: 37.5 kWh usable in the LFP version and 52 kWh usable in the NMC version, and both carry the same 11 kW onboard charger. That charger is flexible about phases, accepting a full 32 A from one phase or 16 A from each of three. The Type 2 inlet sits inside the CCS flap on the offside front wing, ahead of the door rather than behind it, and there is no front compartment because the climate system occupies the nose.

Which charging cable do I need for a Volkswagen ID. Polo?

British homes run on a single phase, and that is where the cable rating decides the outcome. A wall box on a 32 A circuit can pass 7.4 kW, and the ID. Polo will take all of it, because its onboard charger accepts the full 32 A on one phase rather than stopping at 16 A. A Voldt® 22 kW cable is built around 32 A conductors and lets that current through, which means about six hours for the 37.5 kWh battery and about eight and a half hours for the 52 kWh one. An 11 kW cable carries 16 A per phase, so on the same single-phase supply the car settles at 3.7 kW and those figures stretch to roughly twelve hours and sixteen and three quarter hours. The 22 kW cable is the one to buy here, and you will find every length in the Voldt® Type 2 range. On the rare UK property with three phases the car takes 16 A from each and finishes in four hours or five and three quarter hours, which is where an 11 kW cable becomes the exact match instead.

The inlet position changes the length calculation from every other electric Volkswagen. It sits at the front on the driver's side, so a car parked nose-in on a driveway presents its socket at the far end from the road, while a car reversed in presents it near the pavement. A six-metre cable is enough where the wall box is mounted close to the front offside corner and the car always arrives the same way round. An eight-metre or ten-metre cable is the sensible default, because it covers both orientations without forcing you to think about it. A fifteen-metre cable handles a shared car park, a detached garage or a long run down the side of a building.

A red CEE socket carries three phases, so the Voldt® 11 kW portable charger and its 16 A red plug give the ID. Polo everything the car can accept: four hours for the smaller battery and five and three quarter hours for the larger one, which is quicker than a single-phase wall box manages at home. The charger adjusts between 8 A and 16 A, so you can bring it down where a workshop circuit also feeds machinery. Blue CEE sockets are far more common on campsites and at holiday cottages, and the Voldt® 16 A blue CEE charger works from a single phase at 3.7 kW, filling the 37.5 kWh battery in about twelve hours and covering a useful part of the 52 kWh one across a long stop.

For a domestic three-pin socket the Voldt® three-pin charger adjusts from 8 A to 13 A, and 13 A is the ceiling BS 1363 allows on a domestic plug rather than a limit of the charger. At the top of the range it draws up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what your wiring or installation can sustain, and a thermal sensor in the plug monitors the temperature of the connection and trims the current automatically if it climbs. Twelve hours at that setting returns around 28 kWh, close to 110 miles of driving, where a charger held at 10 A returns about 23 kWh, or around 90 miles. The same inlet also works in reverse: Vehicle-to-Load is standard on every ID. Polo and supplies up to 3.6 kW to tools, camping equipment or another car through a Voldt® V2L adapter.
