The BMW iX2, introduced in 2024, is BMW's coupé-profile electric crossover: lower and sleeker than its iX1 sibling, sharing the same platform beneath a sportier roofline. Two variants make up the range, the front-wheel-drive eDrive20 (150 kW) and the all-wheel-drive xDrive30 (230 kW). Both charge through a CCS connector positioned on the right rear flank. The standard onboard AC charger runs at 11 kW on a three-phase supply, with an optional 22 kW three-phase upgrade available on both models. DC rapid charging peaks at 130 kW, bringing the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 29 minutes.

Matching cable to charger on the BMW iX2

Both iX2 variants use a Type 2 connector for AC charging, making a Voldt® Type 2 cable the right choice across the range. For UK home charging, where most wallboxes run on a single-phase supply, a Voldt® 22 kW Type 2 charging cable is the strongest recommendation. On a single-phase 32A circuit, a 22 kW cable delivers 7.4 kW, while an 11 kW cable on the same installation would cap at 3.7 kW on 16A. That difference roughly halves overnight charge times for any iX2, regardless of which onboard charger it has. Owners who have specified the optional 22 kW charger benefit further: at a compatible three-phase post or workplace charger, the 22 kW cable unlocks the charger's full capability, where an 11 kW cable would limit output to 11 kW and leave the upgrade unused. If you are not sure which onboard charger your car has, the display shows the active rate during any charging session, and the original order specification confirms it.

The iX2's right-rear port position means reversing into a bay places the connector closest to the charge point. As a compact crossover, cable length is slightly less critical than on larger vehicles, but getting it right from the start removes a recurring inconvenience. A 6-metre cable covers most home installations where the wallbox sits close to the parking space. An 8-metre cable is the most practical all-round choice, handling the majority of home layouts and public post positions without needing to reposition the car. A 10-metre cable gives useful extra reach at charge points set back from the bay, and a 15-metre cable handles hotel car parks, longer driveways, and wider commercial layouts without restriction.

Portable charging wherever you need it

The Voldt® 22 kW portable charger connects to a 32A three-phase red commando socket and delivers the full 11 kW to any iX2 running the standard onboard charger, filling the 64.7 kWh battery from near-empty in approximately six and a half hours. Owners with the optional 22 kW charger can draw the full 22 kW from the same socket, cutting that time to around three and a half hours. The Voldt® blue CEE portable charger plugs into the single-phase 16A sockets found at campsites and marinas across Europe, delivering 3.7 kW: enough to add a useful amount of range during an overnight stop, even though a full charge from empty would take closer to eighteen hours.

Where only a standard domestic socket is available, the Voldt® three-pin portable charger draws up to 2.8 kW from a UK household socket, within the limits of what your wiring and installation can safely sustain. A built-in thermal sensor continuously monitors the connection temperature and adjusts the charging current automatically, so the charger adapts to the condition of the socket rather than assuming a fixed load. At that rate, a few hours plugged in still adds a worthwhile amount of range for local journeys: practical for a weekend visit or a short stay where no dedicated charge point is available.
