The Kia Ceed PHEV is a compact hatchback combining a 1.6-litre GDi petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 141 PS. The 8.9 kWh battery delivers up to 31 miles of pure-electric range, enough to cover most daily commutes and short trips without the petrol engine starting. The onboard charger draws a maximum of 3.3 kW from any AC source, meaning a full charge from empty takes around two and a quarter hours on a wallbox and around five hours from a domestic socket. There is no DC fast charging. The Type 2 charge port sits on the left front wing.

Why daily charging makes the difference

The Ceed PHEV's 31-mile electric range covers most weekday driving on electricity alone. Owners who plug in every evening and charge overnight see a noticeable drop in fuel costs, particularly on urban and suburban routes where the electric motor handles the bulk of the work. Those who leave the battery flat are carrying 8.9 kWh of battery weight for no benefit. With a full charge taking just over two hours on a wallbox, the habit asks very little: plug in when you park, unplug when you leave.

Choosing a charging cable

The Ceed's 3.3 kW onboard charger is the limiting factor on charge speed, not the cable or the power source. A 22 kW cable is nonetheless the practical choice: it works identically on this car and carries its full capacity forward to a future vehicle.
