Volkswagen e-UP! charging cable

Volkswagen e-UP! charging cable

7.4kW
The Volkswagen e-UP! has a charging capacity of 7,4kW. So we recommend using a charging cable of atleast 7,4kW for optimal charging speeds.

22kW cable compatible
However, please be aware that a 22kW cable is perfectly capable of charging at 7,4kW. With a 22kW cable you'll have guaranteed optimal charging speeds in the event of a new car or a possible upgrade in charging capacity.

Collection: Volkswagen e-UP! charging cable

The Volkswagen e-up! is a fully electric city car based on the up! platform, produced across two battery generations. The original version (2013–2019) used an 18.7 kWh battery (16 kWh usable), while the updated version (2019–2023) introduced a significantly larger 36.8 kWh battery (32.3 kWh usable), extending WLTP range from around 133 km (83 miles) to 258 km (160 miles). Both generations share the same 61 kW (83 hp) permanent magnet motor, 210 Nm of torque, front-wheel drive, and a top speed of 130 km/h. The 0–100 km/h time is 12.4 seconds on the original battery and 11.9 seconds on the updated version.

The charging inlet is a combined CCS2 socket on the right rear flank of the vehicle, used for both AC and DC charging. The onboard AC charger is rated at 2.3 kW per phase. On a three-phase supply, the charger draws across all three phases for a combined 7.2 kW. On a single-phase supply, it draws one phase only at 2.3 kW, which is considerably slower and worth accounting for when planning home charging. DC rapid charging at up to 40 kW is available as an optional extra via the CCS2 connection, enabling a 10–80% charge in around 37 minutes on the larger battery.

Charging at a wallbox

At 7.2 kW from a three-phase wallbox, the updated 32.3 kWh battery charges from empty to full in approximately 5 hours 30 minutes. The original 16 kWh battery completes a full charge in around 2 hours 30 minutes at the same rate. On a single-phase wallbox, the output drops to 2.3 kW, extending a full charge to around 14 hours for the larger battery and 7 hours for the smaller one. A three-phase wallbox connection makes the most practical use of the e-up!'s onboard charger for daily charging.

Choosing the right cable

With an onboard AC charger that draws up to 7.2 kW across three phases, an 11 kW Voldt® Type 2 cable is the correct match for the e-up! at any wallbox or public AC charge point. It handles the car's full charging capability without restriction and connects to every Type 2 installation built to the IEC 62196-2 standard. A 22 kW cable covers the e-up! identically and adds forward compatibility for any future vehicle with a higher-rated onboard charger.

How long a cable do you need?

Voldt® Type 2 cables are available in lengths from 4 m up to 40 m. For home use, a 6 m cable provides comfortable reach from a wall-mounted wallbox to the right rear inlet without excess cable on the ground. An 8 m or 10 m cable suits situations where the car parks further from the charge point, or where the layout of the driveway or garage does not allow a consistent parking position. For public charge points and workplace bays where the charger position varies, lengths from 10 m upward remove any concern about reach, and Voldt® supplies cables up to 40 m for installations where a longer run is genuinely needed.

Portable charging

The e-up!'s compact battery makes it well suited to portable CEE charging, and the Voldt® portable EV charger is a practical option at any location with industrial sockets. One detail specific to the e-up! is worth noting: because the onboard charger draws 2.3 kW per phase, a 16A single-phase CEE socket delivers 2.3 kW rather than the 3.7 kW that applies to most other EVs. At a 32A three-phase CEE socket, the car's 7.2 kW ceiling applies, giving a full charge in around 5 hours 30 minutes for the 32.3 kWh battery and around 2 hours 30 minutes for the 16 kWh battery. A 16A three-phase CEE socket delivers the same 7.2 kW, giving identical charge times. At a 16A single-phase socket, the 2.3 kW draw means a full charge on the larger battery takes approximately 14 hours, which suits an overnight stop. The 32A three-phase portable charger reaches the e-up!'s full 7.2 kW ceiling and is the most versatile option across a mixed fleet of EVs and PHEVs.
