The BMW M5 marks a significant departure from every M5 that came before it. For the first time in the nameplate's history, the G90 generation pairs the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with a plug-in hybrid system, borrowing the electrified drivetrain architecture from the XM. The S68 petrol engine contributes 430 kW, while a 145 kW electric motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox adds further thrust, for a combined system output of 535 kW and up to 1,000 Nm of torque distributed through M xDrive all-wheel drive. The sedan reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds; the Touring estate in 3.7 seconds. In pure electric mode, both are limited to 140 km/h and cover up to 69 km in the WLTP cycle for the sedan and 67 km for the Touring, drawing on 18.6 kWh of usable battery capacity. No DC rapid charging is available, consistent with BMW's broader PHEV lineup. The Type 2 charging port sits on the left front flank.

The onboard AC charger launched at 7.4 kW but was upgraded to 11 kW early in the production run, and all cars on sale in Europe carry the higher rate. At 11 kW a full charge from near-empty takes approximately two hours and fifteen minutes on a compatible wallbox, a remarkably short session for a battery this size. At a standard household socket the same charge takes around six hours. For a car used primarily as a performance saloon or estate, the ability to fully restore electric range in under two and a half hours makes top-up charging between drives straightforward rather than something that needs planning around.

What cable the M5 needs

The M5 uses a Type 2 connector, so a Voldt® Type 2 charging cable is the correct choice for both sedan and Touring. The onboard charger runs at 11 kW three-phase, and a Voldt® 11 kW cable matches it precisely. With 18.6 kWh of usable battery and a charge time of just over two hours at 11 kW, there is no practical benefit to specifying a higher-rated cable: the M5 will not accept more than 11 kW on AC regardless. A 7.4 kW cable works at a lower rate and extends the full charge to approximately three hours, but given the 11 kW charger is standard, an 11 kW cable is the more sensible default.

The left-front port aligns naturally with forward-entry bay layouts, putting the port adjacent to the post in most public charging configurations. The M5 is a long car in both body styles, but at 11 kW the battery replenishes quickly enough that positioning and cable reach are rarely constraints in practice. A 6-metre cable handles the majority of home setups without difficulty. An 8-metre cable adds flexibility for public posts set further back in the bay or for wider spaces where the port side ends up further from the pillar, and is the more practical default if you charge in varied locations.

Portable charging for the BMW M5

For the M5, a 16A three-phase CEE socket delivers 11 kW, filling the 18.6 kWh battery in around two and a half hours at any campsite, marina, or workshop with a three-phase supply. At that rate a full charge from near-empty takes approximately eight hours, making it a workable overnight option rather than a first choice: for a battery this size, a household socket is just about adequate for a long overnight stop, but access to a CEE socket or a public wallbox is considerably more practical.
