BMW M5 PHEV Charging cable

BMW M5 PHEV Charging cable

7,4kW
The BMW M5 PHEV has a charging capacity of 7,4kW. So we recommend using a charging cable of atleast 7,4kW for optimal charging speeds.

22kW cable compatible
However, please be aware that a 22kW cable is perfectly capable of charging at 7,4kW. With a 22kW cable you'll have guaranteed optimal charging speeds in the event of a new car or a possible upgrade in charging capacity.

Collection: BMW M5 PHEV Charging cable

The BMW M5 G90 is the first plug-in hybrid M5, pairing the 4.4-litre twin-turbo S68 V8 with a 145 kW electric motor for a combined 535 kW and 1,000 Nm through M xDrive all-wheel drive. The saloon reaches 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, the Touring estate in 3.6. The 18.6 kWh usable battery delivers up to 43 miles of electric-only range in the saloon and 42 in the Touring on the WLTP cycle. The Type 2 charging port sits on the left front flank; there is no DC rapid charging, consistent with BMW's wider PHEV range. Early saloons carried a 7.4 kW single-phase onboard charger, but production moved to an 11 kW three-phase unit from late 2024, and the Touring has carried the 11 kW charger from its debut. All M5s currently on sale charge at up to 11 kW.

Which cable suits the BMW M5

The M5 charges via a Type 2 connector, making a Voldt® Type 2 charging cable the correct choice for both saloon and Touring. In the UK, where most home wallboxes deliver single-phase power, the cable rating matters more than the car's headline 11 kW figure suggests. A Voldt® 22 kW cable carries up to 32A, which on a single-phase connection means 7.4 kW: a full charge of the 18.6 kWh battery in around two and a half hours. An 11 kW cable, rated at 16A, limits the same connection to 3.7 kW and stretches that to roughly five and a half hours. For a battery you may want to refill daily, or even twice a day, the difference is worth having. At three-phase public posts, the same 22 kW cable lets the M5 draw its full 11 kW, completing a charge in around two hours. Owners of early 7.4 kW saloons benefit equally: that charger runs at 32A on a single phase, which is precisely what the 22 kW cable carries.

The left front port position pairs naturally with forward pull-in bays, placing the socket beside the post in most public layouts. At home, a six-metre cable covers the typical driveway installation without slack to manage. If your wallbox sits on the opposite side, or you charge regularly at public posts set further back, an eight-metre cable is the more flexible default for a car of the M5's length. Voldt® Type 2 cables are available in 6, 8, 10, and 15-metre lengths.

Portable charging for the BMW M5

The M5's compact battery makes portable charging genuinely quick. At a workshop, holiday property, or rural site with a red three-phase commando socket (CEE), the Voldt® 11 kW red CEE portable charger delivers the car's full 11 kW at 16A per phase, taking the battery from near-empty to full in around two hours: the same speed as a dedicated wallbox, from a socket that was never intended for car charging. Adjustable current settings let you match the output to the supply on site.

At campsites, marinas, and touring parks with blue single-phase commando sockets, the Voldt® blue CEE portable charger charges at up to 3.7 kW, refilling the M5's battery in around five and a half hours: plugged in on arrival, the car is ready for electric running well before the evening is out. Where only a standard three-pin socket is available, the Voldt® three-pin portable charger delivers up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what your household wiring can sustain, covering a full charge in roughly seven hours: overnight, comfortably. A built-in thermal sensor monitors the connection temperature throughout and adjusts the current automatically, so the charger looks after itself on older circuits without any manual intervention. For a PHEV of this kind, the three-pin charger is a complete home charging solution in its own right for anyone without a wallbox: every morning starts with a full battery and 40-odd miles of electric range before the V8 turns a single revolution.

Built to one standard

Every Voldt® charging cable is CE, UKCA, and TÜV certified and manufactured to automotive-grade quality standards. Single-piece moulded connectors with no glue or screws. IP67-rated for full dust protection and temporary submersion, operating reliably from −30 °C to +50 °C. 100% copper conductors with silver-plated contacts ensure low resistance and consistent performance across thousands of charging sessions. Each cable is tested beyond 10,000 connection cycles and backed by a three-year warranty, 100-day returns, and free shipping.
