Collection: BMW X2 xDrive25e PHEV charging cable

The BMW X2 xDrive25e was the first compact Sports Activity Coupé to arrive with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, launched in 2020 and produced until the first-generation X2 gave way to the all-new second-generation model in 2024. It pairs a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine driving the front axle with a 70 kW electric motor on the rear axle, creating a hybrid all-wheel-drive configuration without a mechanical connection between the two ends of the car. Combined system output is 162 kW, and 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.8 seconds. In electric-only mode the X2 xDrive25e can reach up to 135 km/h, covering up to 35 miles in the EU test cycle, with real-world range typically landing between 22 and 28 miles depending on conditions. The high-voltage battery has a gross capacity of 10 kWh with around 8.8 kWh usable. The onboard AC charger is rated at 3.7 kW single-phase, which fills the battery fully in approximately three and a half hours on a compatible wallbox and around five hours from a standard household socket. There is no DC rapid charging capability. The charging port sits on the left front flank, consistent with BMW's PHEV positioning across the range.

Picking the right cable

The X2 xDrive25e uses a Type 2 connector, so a Voldt® Type 2 charging cable is the correct choice. The onboard charger is limited to 3.7 kW single-phase, so a cable rated at 3.7 kW is the direct match for this car. A 7.4 kW cable is a worthwhile upgrade even here: it performs identically at 3.7 kW on the X2 xDrive25e, costs only a little more, and remains significantly more useful if you share the cable with a more capable PHEV or any fully electric vehicle. Going to 11 kW or 22 kW adds further future-proofing at modest extra cost and is the sensible choice if you anticipate owning a higher-capacity EV alongside or after this car.

The left-front port position means driving forward into a bay puts the port closest to the post in most public charging layouts. The X2 xDrive25e's battery is small enough that cable reach is rarely an issue: a full charge takes only a few hours, and even a cable that requires a slight adjustment to reach the post adds no real inconvenience. A 5 or 6-metre cable covers virtually every home setup comfortably. An 8-metre cable adds useful reach for public posts set further from the bay, and is the more sensible default if you regularly charge at varied locations or share the cable with another vehicle.

Portable and away-from-home charging

The Voldt® portable CEE charging cable connects to industrial sockets and is available up to 22 kW via three-phase CEE. For the X2 xDrive25e, a 16A single-phase CEE socket delivers around 3.7 kW, filling the 8.8 kWh battery fully in approximately three and a half hours: a short and comfortable stop at any campsite, marina, or workshop with a socket available. The Schuko portable charger delivers up to 2.3 kW from a standard household socket. At that rate the battery fills from near-empty in around five hours, which is perfectly workable overnight. For a battery this small, the Schuko is a genuinely practical everyday option rather than a fallback: plugging in at home each evening guarantees a full battery each morning without ever needing to think about it.
